Although Taiwan’s status as a country in the worldwide community of nations is a controversial matter, there is little doubt that Taiwan’s democracy has been irreversibly developing, independent of and even antithetical to developments in China.
China, with almost 1.3 billion people, is admired and feared for its economic potential and military prowess; unfortunately, in the areas of politics and human rights, progress has not been made as far or as fast. The Freedom House index rates China as “not free,” giving it a 6.5 on a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 being the least free; the index rates Taiwan as “free,” awarding it a 2.0. Still, far from lambasting China and lauding Taiwan, human rights improvements can and most certainly ought to be made not only on the mainland but on this island as well.
